Amazing camera : Canon EOS 1D Mark IV 16.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3-Inch LCD and 1080p HD Video (Body Only)

I have been a Canon shooter for a while now but seriously considered jumping to Nikon with the release of the D3. I stuck it out with my 1D3 which, despite the negative reviews, performed exceptionally well for me.

When the D3S released it was all I could do to resist hitting the "buy" button. I wanted to see what the 1D4 specs looked like before I made my mind up to either stay with Canon or do like many other Canon pro body shooters and make the switch to Nikon.

The 1D4 released and I liked the specs, so I bought the camera. I was one of the first in the US to get my hands on a 1D4, I received mine at the end of January when the first few bodies landed. I've been shooting with it for a month now and I can say, it's an amazing body.

AF:
The autofocus system is noticeably superior to the 1D3's, which was outstanding to begin with. My 1D3 didn't have the sub-mirror problem that plagued other users, so in that respect I was lucky. My 1D3 had its quirks, like losing focus on subjects rapidly approaching or not really doing so well in very low light. The 1D4 not only remedies these quirks of the 1D3, it goes even further and takes an already great body and makes it exceptional. I've shot basketball games in dimly lit stadiums, I've shot outdoor (albeit winter) sports, I've shot birds, I've shot in studio and each and every time I'm impressed with the 1D4's performance.

ISO:
The high ISO is good, but not what I had hoped. I mean, with a little noise reduction in post processing I can easily get beautiful images at ISO 12800. Anything past 12800 and the images are for the most part unusable. There is some chroma noise at ISO 6400 and above, but the luminance noise is more noticeable. Despite having some grain to the 6400+ images there is amazing detail in the high ISO images. They clean up very nicely and produce print quality work. It is about 1 stop better performance than my 1D3, which is good. It's about even with my 5D2 with the slight advantage going to the 5D2. But the fact that it's close is amazing.

Controls:
I really like the new features like being able to register two different AF points based on camera orientation. I also like being able to have two AF points registered for each orientation. I can select two points in the horizontal position for example and while shooting hit the AE Lock button and toggle between them instantly. This is very helpful when shooting sports and other events. The ability to use the joystick to quickly select a new AF point is also a nice touch, one that I use often. The lack of a video button seems a bit odd (such as the one found on the 7D) but I don't really use the video function on DSLR's, so this is a moot point for me. Aside from a few under the hood changes, the controls are quite similar to the 1D3 cosmetically, something that's kind of comforting to long time 1D shooters.

Auto ISO:
This feature finally made it to the 1 series and I LOVE IT. I've never worried about Auto ISO in the past, mostly because Canon never really offered a solid implementation. I've been using it on my 1D4 and all I can say is "nice job!" It's very useful.

Overall:
I would say that the 1D4 is more of a 1D3n release. True, it does have a totally new 39 point cross-type sensor AF system and a vastly improved LCD screen along with some other tweaks, but nothing really all that different from the 1D3 that it replaces. I am very happy with the upgrade from the 1D3 to the 1D4 and would make the purchase again. It's a very solid system.

Brilliant Lens a review from Someone who owns both the 1.8D and 1.8G and a former owner of the 1.5G. : Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

I absolutely love this lens. This lens has not come off my D3100 since I bought it 3 weeks ago. My primary purpose for buying this lens was to take portrait pictures indoors of my 2 year old son. I found that with using the kit lens, I still had to use the flash at times even with a high iso. That's when I started researching new lenses.

I chose the new 50 mm lens due to its low light capabilities. This lens does such an amazing job that I have not used the flash at all since. It is important however to switch the white balance settings when moving from indoors to outdoors. I love how this lens is able to blur the backround, so much more than the kit lens could. I initially bought the d3100 to take better pictures than a point-and-shoot could, I feel that this lens has made a similar step-up from the kit lens.

All in all, I can't see myself using the kit lens again. I easily got used to moving around a lot to take pictures, but when you're trying to focus in on a active 2 year old, you're used to doing that anyways. The investment truly is worth it in my opinion, especially if you're trying to capture those priceless moments.

Unassuming humble little jewel of a lens : Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

I bought the 35mm f/1.8G Af-S lens because I wanted a fast, light lens that worked with my camera (a Nikon D40x). Since getting the lens two months ago, I haven't taken it off my camera. I'd recommend this lens to anything with a newer Nikon Dslr. If you'd like to know more about my experiences with the lens, read on.

I'm not a pro photographer, or even a very serious hobbyist. I don't have a huge budget for camera tool (my only camera is a Nikon D40x), and mostly use my camera to take pictures of my children.

For the past combine of years, I've mostly used the
Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G Ed-If Af-S Vr Dx Zoom-Nikkor Lens. I love this lens: it's very flexible, and works much great than I imaginable a lens with that wide a range to work. Unfortunately the 18-200mm lens, like a lot of the zooms that work with the D40/D40x/D60/D5000, have some issues. First of all, the 18-200 is kind of slow. For indoor pictures without a flash, it's difficult to get sharp pictures. Secondly, the 18-200 is heavy. It's awkward walking around with a one pound lens strung around your neck.

I bought the 35mm f/1.8G Af-S lens because I wanted a faster, lighter lens. I hadn't tried a fast prime lens in a long time (probably not since I shot on 35mm film), and probably had unrealistic expectations about what a lens like this could do. I was hoping that I could just set my camera to auto and snap pictures. With normal daylight, I could take some very good pictures inside without a flash. However, there are some practical limits to what a fast prime on a low end camera can do; I had a harder time taking pictures in dimmer light (for example, in an aquarium). It undoubtedly works great than an f/4 lens (which is the approximate gap ,break for most zooms are at this focal length), but it's a subtle difference. (I did get some great results by manually changing Iso and gap ,break settings, but that's not ordinarily practical when you're trying to shoot a inviting toddler.)

On the other hand, this lens is noticeably sharper than the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G Ed-If Af-S Vr Dx Zoom-Nikkor Lens. I've found it easier to take pictures of people with faces in focus and background blurred than I could with the zoom lens. When I bought this lens, I wasn't even thinking about sharpness, but I'm mostly happy with the results. If you can get the foreground in focus, it will look very sharp.

The one issue I have with this lens is that out of focus backgrounds... Look a little strange. Photographers call the look of out-of focus backgrounds "bokeh." Most photographers want out of focus backgrounds to look subtly blurry; you'd want a point of light to look inviting in the middle then taper off at the edges. This lens does the opposite: points of light turn look much more like rings with this lens. To me, the backgrounds look like "ghosting" on an old television. This isn't a deal killer, but it can lead to weird results, particularly if you're taking pictures of people against complex backgrounds. I can undoubtedly take pictures with this lens that I couldn't take without it. However, don't expect a D40 with this lens to achieve as well as a Nikon D700 12.1Mp Digital Slr Camera (Body Only) with the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G Sic Sw Prime Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital Slr Cameras.

I have few other complaints about this lens's performance. It feels as light on the camera as I hoped; it's honestly nice walking around with such a light camera after lugging around a zoom for so long. The camera focuses very swiftly and quietly; like most of the Af-S lenses I've tried, focusing is very fast and accurate. Overall, I'm happy with this lens (especially at half the price of Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Ex Dc Hsm Lens for Nikon Digital Slr Cameras). It's not perfect, but it's reasonably priced and very useful.
